February tends to be a quiet month as far as activities are concerned due to the unpredictable weather!

Monthly Meeting - The St Ives Story - Susan Hart
Culture Club - Cinema visits to see "Into the Woods" and "The Theory of Everything" Scrabble Club and Craft Club had their regular fortnightly afternoon meetings. Sixteen of us had a fascinating walk round Saltaire on Monday led by Maria Glott. Thank you very much, Maria, for telling us all about Sir Titus Salt and bringing the buildings to life for us. The Culture Club had a fascinating visit to The Prince of Wales Park on Monday 9th June. We were met by Alan Mirfield who led us round and explained to us all the things the "Friends" of the park were doing to try and restore the park to its former glory and all the plans they had for the future. Contrary to how it looks on the photo the weather was very nice for most of the time - it was just at the end that the heavens decided to open! We had lunch afterwards at The Five Rise Hotel and were absolutely drenched by the time we got there! We had another very successful Spring Market on Saturday. This year we were supporting MacMillan Cancer Support and we had been busy knitting these little chickens and stuffing them with a Cadbury's Cream Egg; they proved very popular. A big thank you to all those who helped and came along to support us. More photos can be seen on our Photo Gallery 2014 page. Some of our members have just been on a Federation visit to the ballet, Cinderella, at Leeds Grand Theatre. We were treated to an enthralling talk by Hanneke Dye at our November meeting, you could have heard a pin drop! She is a Jew and was born in hiding during the war in a house in Holland and then spent her early years hidden in an orphanage. She was also a torch bearer for the London 2012 Olympics and brought along the torch to be passed around -it was a great relief when it managed to get round without being dropped! When Harden Players asked to be involved with their production of Calendar Girls we were a bit apprehensive about what they wanted us to do! But we needn't have worried; we assisted with decorating the entrance with sunflowers and selling homemade cakes, biscuits and preserves in the interval. More photos in our photo gallery pages. We raised at least £250 which will be donated to the Calendar Girls' Leukaemia charity. |
