West Yorkshire Federation Annual Meeting

20/4/2012

What a successful day this was for Harden and District WI.  Seven of us set off to Pudsey on Tuesday 17th April for the Annual Meeting which we always enjoy as it's a wonderful way of finding out what is going on in our area.  The morning speaker was our NFWI chair, Ruth Bond, and in the afternoon, Coling Harding, a curator at the National Media Museum in Bradford spoke to us about the museum.
But, as well as the two speakers, there were plenty of awards and prizes to be handed out and our WI got four mentions!  Firstly, we were presented with a cup for gaining the biggest percentage of new members last year - and a very big cup it was as well - I wonder who's going to have to clean it!!  Next came the award of £30 for coming second in the Quiz last month.  The result of the Craft Competition 'Going for Gold' was eagerly awaited as one of our members had entered a wallhanging and there was tremendous disappointment when it wasn't chosen by the judges.  However, during the lunchbreak there was an opportunity for everyone to vote for their favourite entry and a big cheer went up from the Harden contingent when our entry won the popular vote!  And finally, there was a special draw for the 50/50 Club and another of our members won the top prize of £100.  So well done to everyone.
We all came away from the meeting feeling extremely proud of our WI.

West Yorkshire Federation Annual Meeting

Yesterday 8 of our members went along to the West Yorkshire Federation Annual Meeting in Pudsey and we had a wonderful time.  It's a really good way of finding out what else is happening in the WI.  Each committee chairman told us what their particular committee had been doing and more importantly what was coming up in the future.

But as well as all that we had a PowerPoint presentation by a paramedic from the Yorkshire Air Ambulance in the morning and found out lots of things we didn't know about their wonderful organisation.

The afternoon speaker was Lesley Smith as "Mistress Shakespeare" and she had us in stitches with her tales of life in Shakespeare's times.  She has spoken at the Annual Meeting several times before and she never fails to have us "rolling in the aisles" with her hysterical portrayals of historical characters!

There was also a competition entitled "Seasons - any one will do" when members had been asked to make something demonstrating any craft technique they wanted.  The Judge's 1st choice  was a lovely collection of little dolls with tiny hats portraying Easter/Spring time.  But the Judge's 2nd choice was a small 3D wallhanging portraying Summer  made by a member of Harden WI.  The judging was then thrown open to the members and the Harden entry was the overwhelming winner gaining more than twice as many votes as any of the others.

So it's been a really successful, if somewhat busy, seven days for Harden WI!!
